There is a new voice in town. Its punchy and commanding, a voice I would use anytime to pass judgment on the world. When you hear it you are reminded of the vocal Pentecostal preachers, and maybe he is a preacher after all, in a different kind of ministry, the gospel hip-hop ministry. It is the voice of Samuel David Lumasi aka E on F Lumasi (Eyes on the Future Lumasi). Born in 1994, E on F hails from Mikuju village in Chipoka Salima, the lake shore district. He studied forestry at Malawi College of Forestry.
His music journey started in 2014 when he started writing lyrics. But it wasn’t until 2019 that he started doing music professionally. His first song, ‘escape’ was done in 2020. He has so far released two singles, Escape and another one, ‘Appreciation’, plus a spoken word poetry piece. He is inspired by the likes of suffix, David Kalilani, Janta Macelba and many other artists. Choosing Gospel Hip-hop wasn’t easy, since 2014 he has been experimenting with other genres of music until he settled for the gospel hip-hop genre.
Currently, his biggest challenge is cash. “It is hard to pay for studio costs and have your music promoted, it needs money.” Self-doubt has also been one of his challenges. Education took his time from music as well. Another challenge is the environment he is staying in; he wishes he was staying in a musically inclined environment, he claims at least when he was staying in Lilongwe he was associating with some musically inclined folks, but now he is working in Mulanje, close to the border with Mozambique where the only radios he listens to are Mozambican stations. Still, he doesn’t let these setbacks defeat him. He keeps pushing hard and maybe he may even compose some lyrics with a Mozambican touch, its music right?
When asked what he wants out of music he explains that, if he pushes hard, he believes music can take him to places he has never been to. He also looks forward to the day when music is going to pay his bills and make him known across the world.
You may think that he is the only one doing music in his family, but that is not the case. E on F Lumas is not the only music head in the family. His Young Brother Happy, aka Young PS, another young brother Innocent and their sister, Lucy Chinoko are all into music.
Asked about his music creation process, E on F says, “All lyrics are from my head. I write them alone, no one has ever written a lyric for me. I do memorize all the lyrics and punch the voice into the condenser without looking at the lyrics. And if the producer tells me the part is not good I can switch to another lyric on the spot.” Currently there is no one promoting him, he is promoting himself.
He also challenges that he can do other genres of music like dancehall. He goes on to explain that he learns dancehall music from his brother whom he has stayed with for a long time.
