Ishmael Dapalapa Mhango who has rebranded to Ish Dapa is not new on our music scene. In 1998 he set up a Mzuzu based band called Cool Giants which almost won the Malawi Gin and Music Crossroads competitions. As a solo artist he was among the top 4 in Malawi Pop Idols competition in 2007. He trekked to South Africa in 2008 where he ventured in hospitality business. He has however decided to resurrect his music career with a latest EP released this month with four tracks.
He started his career when he was 8 years old in church choir in Dedza where his father was working for the Commercial Bank of Malawi now Standard Bank. His First album was TIDZIYAMIKA. Second was MUSAWELUZE while the tittle for this EP is LIFE whose tracks are Time, Chikondi, Werenga and Ndipo-Ndipo.
He has had a mixed musical journey with ups and downs. When he shifted to Mzuzu, he left the church choir with higher expectations and started his participation in the Rap and Ragga competitions that came together with multiparty politics. This is where he met DJ Zouzo Ranks and multi-talented artist Manase Chisiza who introduced him to a different kind of music world.
With the exposure he attained when he participated in the Rap and Ragga competitions, he collaborated with a few friends to form a band the Cool Giants. That started live performances competing in Malawi Gin (2001 - 2002) and Music Crossroads from 2002 to 2005.
As solo artist, he competed in the first ever Malawi Pop Idols competition which was being called the e-wallet out of 25 contestants he was evicted as number 4.
Ish Dapa comes from a family of music as his younger brother Bingolingo is also one of the successful Afro-pop urban artists in Malawi.
