The Joyful Souls is a Blantyre-based all-male Gospel Acappella Assemble formed in 1995 on the premise of spreading the gospel through music, among other activities to all manner of people. Among its founders were Rodgers Mpinganjira and Jolly Ntaba.
After some ten years of spreading the gospel of the second coming of Jesus Christ, the group released its first album titled Tidzauluka that was recorded at Ackton Studios. It is an album that featured songs that took the Malawi Music World by storm, for its departure from the traditional four-part-harmonies to six-part-harmonies. A few years later, thus is 2008, the group released its second album titled Adzaweruza, which featured what has seemingly been many people’s favorite – The God of Second Chance. The third album to Joyful Souls’ credit isAbweranso, released in 2012, the first of the group’s albums featuring Acappella songs only. All the tracks in this album were picked from the Seventh-Day Hymn Book (Christu Mu Nyimbo), but were re-arranged by the Joyful Souls to be given the sound the group has been known for over the years.
Abweranso is by far regarded as one of the group’s successful albums, not by sales, but by recognition following its nomination in 2013 as the Best Contemporary Acappella Recorded Album in the CARA Awards. Over the years, the group’s inspiration musically have included The Kings Heralds, Take 6, Glad, Blenders, Acappella Praise, Breath of Life, Water Arties (all from the US), Idea of North from Australia and Real Group from Sweden. Joyful Souls has had the rarest opportunities of sharing the stage with various international singing groups including one of the Africa’s Accapella Powerhouses – The Shower Power (from Zimbabwe) and Durant (which is one of the singing groups signed under the US-based Acappella Company).
Over the years, members have been joining the group and leaving it later for one reason or the other, with onlyRodgers Mpinganjira who has survived all these 20 years. Current Members are apart from Mpinganjira(Founding Member Chairman and the group’s Principal Composer and Arranger), Mark Zakulanda, Aurthur
