Biography

Papa Winnyman is a Malawian song writer, recording artist and producer also known as Winston Chiwaka, sixth born in a family of seven. The name Papa Winnyman came about because of his early music exploits in the eighties when students used to call him the said name because his love for Ragga Toasting at Dharap FP School, Namiwawa and also at Chilomoni Ghetto where he resided at that time. At a tender age, Papa Winnyman always displayed signs of Music Artistry in a family where no one had seriously ventured into music. As he grew up in the streets of Mandala, Blantyre after school he hanged around with the then Rock Band “Los Amigos” of the Peter Da Silva fame in the eighties. In his early teens he became the Lead vocalist of a Ghetto youth Band by the name of Golden Youth which used to curtain raise for bands like Kalimba in Lilongwe. After a while he joined yet another ghetto youth band Burning Creations in Kawale Ghetto where he sang backing vocals and played drums. By his early twenties he joined together with a few guys Kondwani Mkandawire (Keyboards), Peter Msonda (Guitars), Aka Sammy K (Guitars), Thatcher Ngoma (Lead Guitar), Wanangwa Msowoya (Keyboards), Vitu Chiwaka (Drums) and FitzGerald Simfukwe (Percussions & Spiritual Leader) in Mzuzu City in a band which he named The Black Combination which was later bought by a Millionaire from Lilongwe Marshall. In the year 1997 he decided to do away with the life of drugs, sex and rock’n’roll as he discovered Christ and immediately fell in love with the lifestyle. Today, Papa Winnyman has a passion of writing songs with a catalogue of over a hundred raw songs which he writes out of inner inspiration. Late 2012 he recorded a few of the songs from his catalogue hence the passion to record his first album developed. By the beginning of 2013 an eight track album was recorded at Octave Records in Mogoditshane, Botswana under the Sound Engineering expertise of Mr. Kunda Bwanga the CEO of the joint. The album was arranged and produced by Winston Chiwaka . Below is Album cover for the EP. By the end of 2014 Papa Winnyman started working on a new offering this time writing some of the songs in Chichewa and Tumbuka. The album which is entitled Rise up Africa was released on the 1st August, 2016. You can buy the music online at I Tunes, Spotify, and Amazon to mention a few. Papa Winnyman is also on Reverbnation where he’s been in the top 5 since the beginning. Papa Winnyman has also had very inspiring radio interviews with Trevor Jones of Yarona FM where he had a very good response to his songs by the listeners and also with Cathy Malejane of The radio program “The Cookie Jar” at Duma FM.
