Biography

Tereza Mirovicova is from the Czech Republic. ‘Chikondi’ is the first song on her first album that is to come out in December 2012. All the songs will be in Chichewa and Tumbuka. She has been working in Malawi since 2005 as the director of boNGO Worldwide (NGO improving the standards of education in Malawi - www.bongoworldwide.org ). Making music is a way to raise awareness and funds for boNGO’s projects. The album is going to be produced with the help of Dikamawoko Arts - Tawonga Nkhonjera and Muhanya in particular.

She first came to Malawi in 2002. She was born and raised a Czech. But she comfortably sings in Chichewa and this has mystified audiences during her performances at events like the Lake of Stars, Blantyre Arts Festival and Doogles Lodge cultural evenings. "I sing in Chichewa out of passion," says Tereza Mirovicova who features in Dikamawoko Band, a music outfit owned by multi-talented artist Tawonga Nkhonjera. Tereza is also multi-talented. She is a movie-maker, poetess, story-teller and dramatist. Born on December 6, 1978, she says she fell in love with music at the age of eight. This was at the peak of Communism, a time she remembers Czechs were not allowed to listen to Western music. "However, I found an old Western music tape with songs from the 50s and 60s. I liked the music that I started dancing to it. In fact, songs of the 60s remain my main weakness," she recollects. And she confesses it is a similar sense that came to her when she first listened to Chichewa music, especially the hit Bambo aTereza, done by The Roots. "I instantly fell in love with Chichewa songs," she says.
