Singer, songwriter, keyboardist, composer and entertainer, Vita Chirwa is the current leader of Kalimba, a band he inherited from his late uncle, Griffin Mhango, following his passing in 1996.
Kalimba itself was formed in 1976 and enjoyed huge international success in 1983 after the release of their debut album "Make Friends with the World" which included the big hit "Sometimes I Wonder"
Vita was introduced to music by his late uncle who was an extraordinary guitarist, an excellent vocalist and a great teacher. Many artists who became popular during his time were taught by him.
Vita has featured in some of the later recording projects of Kalimba but has also solely recorded six albums, Eruption (1998); Tiyende Limodzi (1999); Mayo (2000); One in Love (2004); Umoyo (2010) and more recently Kwanu Nkwanu 2014.
Vita lives in Lilongwe but hails from Mzimba, Malawi. He's the first born son in a family of six.
He's married to Ann, with two children-Tatenda and Tinashe.
He has toured Zimbabwe, South Africa and Botswana with his band, Kalimba to perform at the Zimbabwe National Jazz Festival, the SADC Music Festival as well as having a year long stint in Gaborone, respectively.
Vita and his band, Kalimba are well known for their wide repertoire ranging from Jazz to ballads and traditional to pop music. They're a band for every occasion.
Although members of the group have walked in and out over the years, standards of Kalimba have been maintained.
